Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas – formerly known as Town Lake – has been an area attraction for decades. On the Colorado River, Lady Bird Lake offers Austin visitors and residents a variety of recreational activities. This lakeside oasis is pet-friendly, and many visitors can be seen playing catch and Frisbee with their furry friends. Fitness-minded Austinites are guaranteed to love the picturesque hiking, biking and running trails. About ten miles of trails around Lady Bird Lake delight runners and cyclists with scenic lakeside views. Paddle boating and kayaking are popular activities at the lake. Each spring, Austin hosts the largest urban bat population in North America under the Congress Avenue Bridge over Lady Bird Lake. With a population of 1.5 million Mexican Free-tailed bats, this is truly a spectacular sight to see around sunset. These bats are beloved by the city and literally eat tons of pests such as mosquitoes and flies each evening. Conservation efforts have ensured that the bats return to roost each spring from Central Mexico. Visitors and residents alike can watch the evening spectacle from the banks or from a relaxing Lonestar Riverboat Cruise on Lady Bird Lake.

The recreational uses for Lady Bird Lake are nearly endless. Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World, and with its location on the south end of downtown, Lady Bird Lake’s shores host many live concerts for music fans. Zilker Park – another amazing Austin attraction is right next door and downtown shopping and dining are nearby.

Lady Bird Lake is the closest lake to downtown Austin, like a mid-city oasis. Fashionable neighborhoods surround Lady Bird Lake and include the Milago building, Westlake Hills and the Towers of Town Lake.
